OPERATIONS WITH RATIONAL NUMBERS TRANS TEST MONDAY OCT 26, 10F TEST FRIDAY OCT 30
Thursday Oct 22: after a few more minutes of work time, we went over the page from yesterday with this old practice quiz on the front and a calculator challenge on the back. If you missed today's class here is an answer key for them both. Then we had work time for the Trans Math Bedmas worksheet. Here is the answer key (first page) and solution guide (after the first page). If you finish all of that, you can do some textbook review on page 144 #5-23 and page 146 #3-7. I'll give you time to work on this on Monday. Enjoy your day off tomorrow!
Wednesday Oct 21: we started by going over more page 140 questions fom 14-21. Then we did this multiply and divide practice quiz (here is the key if you missed class and want to try it then correct your work). Here is another version of the quiz that you can download for more practice if you feel that you need it (and here is that key) Then we had some time to work on this old practice quiz where you should do #1 and 2 without touching your calculator and a calculator challenge for more practice using your calculator. Here is an answer key for them both. If anyone finishes both of those, you can start on this Trans Math Bedmas worksheet. Tuesday Oct 20: we went over some textbook page 140 questions from #1-13 then we had some time to work on the rest of yesterday's assignment. If you are finished, you can start to do some review for next week's test. I handed out an old practice quiz that you should do without touching your calculator and a calculator challenge to practice using your calculator. Here is an answer key for them both.
Monday Oct 19: we went over pages 25 and 26 in the Unit 1: Rational Numbers Notes Booklet. The rest of the class was time to work on textbook page 140 #3-8, 10-14, 16-18,21. Make sure that you only use the calculator on questions that SAY to use a calculator. If you don't finish to the end of #13 by the end of the class, you have to finish it for homework. If you finish with time to spare, you can try the Six Seven Challenge.
Friday Oct 16: we started class by going back to the examples on pages 23-24 of the Unit 1: Rational Numbers Notes Booklet and tried using our calculators to do the BEDMAS in one calculation. Then we had time work on the Quick Practice questions on page 25 and the word problems on page 26. A fun way to do this homework is to do questions by hand, showing your work step-by-step, like we did in our examples in class, then once you have a solution, try to use your calculator to get the solution in one single calculation. If you don't finish these two pages by the end of the class, they are homework for Monday. If you finish with time to spare, try the Six Seven Challenge. I'll post solutions for it next week. Thursday Oct 15: Identifying, Comparing and Ordering Rationals Test. Students who finish with time to spare can work on the Quick Practice questions on page 25 and the word problems on page 26 of Unit 1: Rational Numbers Notes Booklet.
Wednesday Oct 14: we had some more time to work on the Rationals: Comparing and Ordering Extra Review . Reminder that we test that material tomorrow. We also went back to the Unit 1: Rational Numbers Notes Booklet and went through the BEDMAS examples on pages 23-24. If you finish tomorrow's test with time to spare, you can work on the Quick Practice questions on page 25 and the word problems on page 26.
Tuesday Oct 13: we corrected the "Dividing Rational Numbers (fractions"" examples and the "Quick Practice" questions on page 22 of the Unit 1: Rational Numbers Notes Booklet. Then we did a quick review of the Comparing and Ordering Rational Numbers skills from the start of the unit. We went over the Trans test on these outcomes and then we discussed what will be different about these skills on the test we'll do on Thursday. For one last review on this material, I handed out this Rationals: Comparing and Ordering Extra Review to work on for the rest of the class. We'll have some more time to finish it up a go over some of it tomorrow.
Friday Oct 9: we went over the page 19 "Quick Practice" questions in the Unit 1: Rational Numbers Notes Booklet. Then we went through the Dividing Rational numbers lesson on pages 20-22. Your homework is to complete the "Dividing Rational Numbers (fractions"" examples and the "Quick Practice" questions on page 22. Have a great long weekend!
Thursday Oct 8: we went over the word problems on page 16 of the Unit 1: Rational Numbers Notes Booklet . After that, we got into the mulitplying rational numbers notes on pages 17-18 of the Unit 1: Rational Numbers Notes Booklet. Your homework for tomorrow is to do the quick practice questions on page 19.
Wednesday Oct 7: we started with going over some of the questions from textbook pages 111 and 119 and we went over how to do page 113 and 120 together. Then we did a practice quiz on adding rational numbers. If you missed class and want to try it yourself, there are 2 versions you can download: Version A (and the key) and Version B and the key). Students in class were given one version to do in class and the other to use as homework practice. Then we got back to page 15 of the Unit 1: Rational Numbers Notes Booklet (and discovered thanks to Edwin that my answer to quick practice f was wrong it should be -7 32/33). Then we had the rest of the class to try the word problems on page 16. You should be done these for tomorrow.
Tuesday Oct 6: for a warm up, we did this review of integer skills (front) and fraction skills (back) worksheet and corrected it. I showed the class some fun shortcut tricks on their calculators. The rest of class was time to finish up those page 111 and 119 questions. Reminder that the questions were: textbook page 111 #5,7,9,11 and page 119 #3,5,7,9,13. If you aren't finished them by the end of the class today, they are homework for tomorrow. If you are done all of that, you should work on some Pascal or Intermediate Contest practice.
Monday Oct 5: I had a guest teacher today, so it was a work period for textbook page 111 #5,7,9,11 and page 119 #3,5,7,9,13. If you finish those and you are up for a challenge, you can try page 113 #20 and page 120 #15, but I don't expect everyone to get those!
Friday Oct 2: we started by going over the rest of the Rational Number Review Assignment (the answer key is in the link) and the Extra Practice 1 sheet. Then we did a Trans Math test on Comparing and Ordering Rational numbers. People who finished early had time to work on the "Quick Practice" questions on page 15 of the Unit 1: Rational Numbers Notes Booklet. I gave the class the answers to these questions at the end of the period. You are homework free for the weekend! Huzzah! Make sure to bring your textbook in to class on Monday.
Thursday Oct 1: we went through the "Quick Practice" questions on page 12 of the Unit 1: Rational Numbers Notes Booklet, then we did the word problems on page 13 together before moving on to the Subtracting Rational Numbers lesson on pages 14-15. The assignment for this section is the "Quick Practice" questions on page 15. You can work on them tomorrow when you finish the little Trans test we're going to do on comparing and ordering rational numbers. To get ready for that, you should spend the rest of this class and some time tonight finishing up the Rational Number Review Assignment (the answer key is in the link) and the Extra Practice 1 sheet that I handed out on Monday.
Tuesday Sept 29: we went over the Categorzing, Comparing, and Ordering Review sheet from Friday and the first page of the Rational Number Review Assignment together. Then we went back to the Unit 1: Rational Numbers Notes Booklet and went through the adding rational numbers lesson on pages 11 and 12. Your homework for this section is the "Quick Practice" questions on page 12. If you finish that with time to spare, you can go back to finish the two review assignments I handed out yesterday: one says Extra Practice 1 on it, the other says, Rational Number Review Assignment. The first one has its own key on the back, the second one has an answer key in the file linked in this post. We will do a Trans Math test on Friday on this material.
Monday Sept 28: we went over page 101 #12 together, then I gave the class time to finish up the Categorzing, Comparing, and Ordering Review that I handed out last week. It has to be done for tomorrow. I also handed out a couple of review assignments: one says Extra Practice 1 on it, the other says, Rational Number Review Assignment. The first one has its own key on the back, the second one has an answer key in the file linked in this post. Friday Sept 25: we went over page 101 #23 and 25 together. Then I handed out a warm up handout that has some Trans-level questions and a couple of grade 9 level number lines. If you missed class and want to download it and try it yourself, here is the link for it (the answer key is at the end of the file). Then we had a few minutes to try Page 101 #12, if you don't finish it in class today it is homework for Monday. Also, over the weekend, see if you can finish the Categorzing, Comparing, and Ordering Review that I handed out yesterday - we'll say that it is due for Tuesday.
Thursday Sept 24: We started with a number categorizing activity, then we went over the textbook questions, page 101 #8-11,21 from yesterday, then we had some work time for Page 101 #23-25. I gave the class some work time, but if you don't finish those questions, they are homework for tomorrow. If you do finish the textbook questions you can get started on this Categorzing, Comparing, and Ordering Review.
Wednesday Sept 23: we corrected the "quick practice" questions on page 10 of the Unit 1: Rational Numbers Notes Booklet. Then we had time to work on the textbook page 101 questions that I assigned yesterday: #8-11, 21, 23-25. You must be done up to #21 for tomorrow. In class tomorrow, I will give you a little more time to finish #23-25. We finished up class by watching a video of a mathematically interesting hotel. If you want to re-watch the Hilbert Hotel video I showed to the class today, here is the link. We ended the class spending a few minutes discussing its implications.
Tuesday Sept 22: First, we went over some of the textbook page 101 and page 103 assignment from Friday. Then we went over Example 5 on page 9 of the Unit 1: Rational Numbers Notes Booklet. Then we finished up the rest of the examples on pages 9 and 10. Your homework for tonight is to do the "Quick Practice" questions on page 10. If you finish that, work on the textbook assignment for this textbook page 101 #8-11, 21, 23-25. These should be done for Thursday. I will give you some work time for that tomorrow.
Monday Sept 21: we corrected the the Fraction/Decimal/Percent practice page, Then we went through the lesson on pages 8 and most of page 9 of the Unit 1: Rational Numbers Notes Booklet. We will finish up pages 9 and 10 tomorrow. For homework tonight, see if you can do examples 5 to 8 on page 9. We'll pick it up there tomorrow.
Friday Sept 18: we went back to Unit 1: Rational Numbers Notes Booklet and we went through the examples on pages 6-7. Then we had time to work on textbook page 101 #5-7 and page 103 #26, 27. If you are already done the textbook assignment, go back and make sure you are finished this Fraction/Decimal/Percent practice page from earlier in the week. If anyone is done all of that, they could work on the 2026 Pascal Math Contest that I handed out to a few students the other day. Thursday Sept 17: I handed out the Unit 1: Rational Numbers Notes Booklet and we went through pages 1-5. That takes us to the assignment: textbook page 101 #5-7 and page 103 #26, 27, these questions are due for Monday.
Wednesday September 16: I handed out a little practice quiz on the Fraction to Decimal notes that we have been working on over the last couple of classes (the file here has an answer key if you missed class and want to try it for yourself). After we corrected that, we continued the notes into Percent conversions and refreshed our memories on how to handle Fractions/Decimals/Percents of numbers larger than 1 and smaller than 1%. Then I gave the class some time to work on the practice page that I handed out on Monday. You should be done it for Friday.
Tuesday September 15: we corrected the Venn diagram activity handout from yesterday and we went over the solutions to the BEDMAS puzzles page that I handed out on our first class last week. If you missed today's class and want to correct your work on your own, here is the key to the venn diagrams and here is the key for the Bedmas puzzles. Then we went back to the notes we started yesterday and finished up Fraction to Decimal converstions, before moving on to Decimal to Fraction conversions. Tonight, you can work on the practice page that I handed out yesterday, but I will give you work time tomorrow after we review percents. Let's say it should be done for Friday.
Monday September 14: we started with a venn diagram activity to help us think about how we categorize numbers. Here is a copy of the handout. We ended class by reviewing some grade 7 and 8 skills on how to switch numbers from their Fraction form to their Decimal forms. I handed out this practice page that you can start on tonight if you'd like, but we won't correct it until later in the week, so it's not homework yet. We have to finish up the notes we started today first.
Friday September 11: we started with a quick round of the 24 game. If you want to play this game yourself and use the online solver I was using in class to see if you are really stuck, here is a link to it. Then we played a little game with the numbers on the bottom of our textbooks. Over the weekend, see if you can finish up the BEDMAS puzzles page that I handed out yesterday.
Thursday September 10: Welcome to Grade 9 Math! Nothing too strenuous on the first day! We learned how to play 24! Then we went over the course outline. I handed out these BEDMAS puzzles for you to try while I handed out and assigned textbooks - it is NOT homework for tomorow. You can have some more time to play with that worksheet tomorrow. See you tomorrow!
Wednesday September 9: no classes on day 1. Just get your locker, have a hot dog and see you tomorrow for the first official day of classes!
