Grade 11 Pre-Calculus 30S - Slot 6 Semester 1

Thursday Oct 22: we lost this class to the pep rally.  Make sure you have tried the page 157 questions for Monday.  Enjoy your day off tomorrow!

Wednesday Oct 21:  Today we went over the last three examples of lesson 3.1b on pages 15-16, then we did the summary on page 17 and had work time for textbook page 157 #1,2,4,6-10,12,13,15,18.  We're moving on from here on Monday, so they should be done for then.

Tuesday Oct 20: Today we started by going over the 2nd example on page 10, then we did most of the 3.1b lesson in the  Chapter 3 Quadratics notes package.  This takes us up to the middle of page 14 in the notes booklet.  I left the examples on pages 15 and 16 for you to try - we'll go over them tomorrow and then do the summary on page 17.  The homework for this lesson is textbook page 157 #1,2,4,5a,6-10,12,13,15,18, but you don't have to start that until tomorrow.  I'll be adding to that tomorrow, but then you will get some in-class work time on Thursday.  If you are bored tonight and don't feel like trying those textbook problems yet, you can do the trinomial factoring practice page that I handed out after yesterday's test (grades are up on Edsby, by the way!)

Monday Oct 19:   Sine Law and Cosine Law test. For anyone who finished early, I handed out this trinomial factoring practice page.

Friday Oct 16:  Last call for any 2.3 or 2.4 problems from the regular homework or the textbook review before Monday's test.  Then we went through a functions review on pages 1-4 and lesson 3.1a on pages 5-10 of the new Chapter 3 Quadratics notes package.  I left Example Graph #2 on page 10 for you to try.  We'll go over it on Tuesday.  Other than that, we're not ready for new homework yet, so you can spend time this weekend getting ready for Monday's Sine and Cosine Law test.

Thursday Oct 15:  we checked to see if anyone has any homework issues and went over some page 119 problems together.  Then we did the 2.3-2.4 Mini Quiz (the file link has a key).  Then we had a few minutes to work on some review on  textbook pages 127 #11-24 and page 129 #4,5,7-10.  If you are looking for a few more review problems, check out this page of Trig Questions from old Grade 12 Essential Math Provincial Exams (the Essential Math students do this same T3 outcome that you did, just without any ambiguous case problems).  It has an answer key if you want to give them a try,  Here are a couple more.

Wednesday Oct 14:  I handed back the T1/T2 test and we discussed some of the concepts that some people struggled with (the most important of these is the concept that students need to do their homework if they want any chance of earning this credit!).  Then we went over a few of the page 108 questions together.  After that, we had work time for textbook page 119 #1 - 6,7, 10, 12, 17,23, 24, 26 which should be done for tomorrow.

Tuesday Oct 13:  we started by looking at the back side problem of the handout from Friday's class.   Then we went back to the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook and did the Cosine Law lesson on pages 24-25. If you missed class and are catching up on your own, watch example 23 - it has a typo - the bottom line should be 75 units.   The assignment for this section is textbook page 119 #1 - 6,7, 10, 12, 17,23, 24, 26.  I'll give you some time to work on this tomorrow and we'll go over these on Thursday.  We will test Sine and Cosine law on Monday.

Friday Oct 8:  we started by looking at a Sine Law Word Problems on this handout, then we finished up our discussion of  the Congruent Triangle Activity.  (if you missed last class and need instructions on how to do it, work your way through this power point).  Then we did the Lesson 2.3B notes on pages 21-23 of the the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook.  The assignment for this section is textbook  page 108 #6-9,11, 17,23.   This assignment, along with the other page 108 assignment from the previous lesson, should both be done for Tuesday.  Have a great long weekend!

Thursday Oct 8:  TEST 2:  OUTCOMES T1 and T2.  If you finish with time to spare, work on textbook page 108 #1-5, 10, 12, 13, 15,18, 20.

Wednesday Oct 7:  we started with a check in to see if anyone has any T1 or T2 questions from the practice worksheets or the textbook review.  Then we went back to the  Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook and finished up the last couple of examples in lesson 2.3A on page 20.  The assignment for this section is textbook page 108 #1-5, 10, 12, 13, 15,18, 20, but you don't have to be done this assignment until next week, so please keep your focus on Thursday's T1 and T2 test (make sure you know your unit circle!).  We ended class by starting  the Congruent Triangle Activity.  I don't have a video for this activity, but if you missed class and want to try it for yourself, you can work your way through this power point that goes step by step on drawing the triangles.

Tuesday Oct 6:  we went over a few of the Page 96 questions together,  we did the 2.2 Practice Quiz and the 2.2B Practice Quiz from the quiz booklet I handed out last week.  Reminder that you still have the Exact Values of Trig Ratios worksheet and the Trig Equations Worksheets to work on (there are two answer key mistakes on the 2.1 Part 2 page:  #3 should be 135, 225 and #4 should be 0,180, and 360)., and if you want more practice, there is textbook review on Page 126 #1-10 and page 129 #1-3, 6.  We finished class by starting the lesson on pages 18-19 of the  Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook.  We'll finish it tomorrow.  Bring a protractor and ruler to class tomorrow - we'll be drawing stuff!

Monday Oct 5:  I have a guest teacher in today, so it is work time for textbook page 96 #1-16,18,21-24,29 (this is a combination of the two assignments at the bottom of pages 15 and 17 of the notes package). If you finish that, for more practice,  I handed out this Exact Values of Trig Ratios worksheet.  We test the material up to the end on page 17 on Thursday.  If anyone gets through all of that, there is 2.1 and 2.2 review in the textbook that you can start, to help you prepare for the T1 and T2 (up to page 17 in your notes booklet) Test on Thursday:  Page 126 #1-10 and page 129 #1-3, 6.

Friday Oct 2:  We started with a Unit Circle activity, then we went over any homework problems people had with the page 83 questions that were assigned yesterday.  After that we went through Lessons 2.2.2 and 2.2.3 on pages 14-17 of the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook.  The assignment for today is page 96 #1-16,18,21-24,29 (this is a combination of the two assignments at the bottom of pages 15 and 17 of the notes package).   I have a guest teacher in on Monday, so you will get some work time.

Thursday Oct 1:  we went over a few of the questions from textbook page 83 #1-7,9,15-17, 20 together.  Then we did a 2.1.1 practice quiz (key attached).  Then we kept on rolling through lesson 2.1.3, pages 10-12 and lesson 2.2.1, pages 14 and 15 of the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook.  The assignment for the 2.1.3 section is textbook page 83 #8,10 -13, 22,23.  This assignment needs to be done by tomorrow.

Tuesday Sept 29:  we did a quick check in to see if anyone needed help finishing the  Right Angle Trigonometry Review (here is the key).  Then we looked at some very special triangles, and continued through Lessons 2.1.2 on pages 7-9 in the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook.   We need to keep going in the notes booklet before tackling the next homework assignment, but remember that you have textbook page 83 #1-7,9,15-17, 20 to be done for Thursday.  Reminder that there is no school tomorrow.

Monday Sept 28:  I handed out the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook.  We went through the Lesson 2.0 Trigonometry Review on pages 2-3.  From this refresher, you should be able to finish the Right Angle Trigonometry Review (here is the key) that I handed out after your test on Thursday.  We continued through lesson 2.1.1 in the in the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook.  The assignment for this section is textbook page 83 #1-7,9,15-17, 20.  I'll give you until Thursday to get this assignment done.

Friday Sept 25:  we lost this class to the Terry Fox Run.  Over the weekend, you can  finish up the  Right Angle Trigonometry Review (here is the key) - if you are stuck on how to do this material, you'll see me do a quick review of these skills on Monday, so let's say it should be done for Tuesday.

Thursday Sept 24:  R9 and R10 TEST.  If you finish with time to spare, I handed out this Right Angle Trigonometry Review (here is the key) that you can work on.  If you need some refreshers on how to do the trig, don't panic - we'll review that in Monday's lesson.

Wednesday Sept 23: we went over a few 1.5 homework problems.  Then we did the 1.5 Mini Quiz.  Then this class was work time for the two reviews I handed out yesterday.  Test tomorrow.

Tuesday Sept 22:  We finished up the last 1.5 example then had some work time for the 1.5 assignment from yesterday.  If you are finished that, I handed out two reviews for Thursday's test:   a Chapter 1 Skill Practice Review and a Chapter 1 Word Problem Review.  The files linked here have answer keys, but there are a couple of errors:  on the Chapter 1 Skill Practice Review: #2 should read: "IF these are arithmetic series",  #9a should be 1400, #13a should be -7174454.  #13b is NOT a bad question, it fits on my calculator just fine and the answer rounds nicely to 125.  Chapter 1 Word Problem Review:  #7 should be $12564.89 (if you call $1000 T1, then you are solving for t11).

Monday Sept 19:  we went over some problems from the 1.4 assignment, then we did the 1.4 Mini-Quiz.  Then we did the 1.5 Lesson in the Sequences and Series booklet.  This included a discussion of Zeno's Paradox.   The assignment for this section is textbook page 63 #1-5-8,11, 12, 14, 15, 19, 20.  This should be finished for Wednesday.  I'll give you some time to work on them tomorrow.

Friday Sept 18:  we went over some problems from the 1.3, page 39 assignment, then we did the the 1.3 Mini-Quiz.  Then  had time to work on the 1.4 assignment: page 53 #1-6, 8,10,11,13,15-19 which is due Monday.

Thursday Sept 17:  we finished the notes for 1.3 and continued through lesson 1.4 in the Sequences and Series booklet.  Then we had time to work on the 1.3 assignment:  textbook page 39 #1-10, 12, 13, 18, 20, 22, 23, 26, 27.  These should be done for tomorrow.  If anyone finishes that, you can move on to start on the 1.4 assignment: page 53 #1-6, 8,10,11,13,15-19. We'll go over that on Monday.

Wednesday Sept 16:  after checking in to see if anyone was stuck on the 1.2 homework (7b has the wrong answer in the textbook - it should be either 83160 or 83166), we did the 1.2 Mini Quiz from the booklet.  Then we did the 1.3 lesson in the  Sequences and Series booklet. The assignment for this section is textbook page 39 #1-10, 12, 13, 18, 20, 22, 23, 26, 27.  We'll go over the last couple of examples in the lesson tomorrow, then go through lesson 1.4 and have some work time.  We'll go over the page 39 assignment and quiz it on Friday.

Tuesday Sept 15:  we spent time going over all of the types of problems on the Grade 10 Skill Review, then we had some work time for the 1.2 assignment, textbook page 27 #1-7, 9,10,12,14,16,19,23.  We will go over any problems you have with it tomorrow and then mini-quiz it.

Monday Sept 14:  we started by seeing if anyone was stuck on any of the textbook page 16 questions assigned on Friday.  Then we did a mini-quiz on that material (Section 1.1) from a booklet of quizzes that I handed out.  Please DON'T do the rest of those quizzes for homework!  They are meant to be done in class as practice for the upcomming test.   If you missed class and want to try the mini-quiz yourself, the answer key is at the end of the file link.  After that, we went through Lesson 1.2 in the Sequences and Series booklet.   The homework is textbook page 27 #1-7, 9,10,12,14,16,19,23.   Tomorrow, I'll go over more of the questions from the Grade 10 Skill Review (like some of the factoring) and then give you some time to work on the 1.2 homework.

Friday September 11: I fielded a few questions about the exercises on the grade 10 skill review sheet, then we looked at Lesson 1.1 in the Sequences and Series booklet that I handed out today.  The homework for Monday is textbook page 16 #1-11,15,19,21,24,25.  Also, Monday I'll use a bit more class time to review some material on the grade 10 skill review sheet, so see if you can try it all by then.

Thursday September 10:  Welcome to  Pre-Calculus!  Here is the course outline and an overview of the curriculum.  Here is a Grade 10 Skill Review, just to refresh some skills while I  hand out your textbook.   The questions on the Grade 10 Skill Review should be things you already know how to do, but don't panic if you need a little bit of refresher on those skills.  Definitely panic and run, don't walk, to your counselor to switch to Applied or Essential Math if you can't do any of it!  If you want to work on it some more tonight, great - but if you want to finish it up over the weekend, we'll go over it starting on Monday.

Wednesday September 9:  no classes on day 1.  Just get your locker, have a hot dog and we'll see you tomorrow for the first official day of classes!
