Grade 11 Pre-Calculus Math (Honours) - SLOT 6

(ANSWER KEYS HERE:  Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4) - watch for typos on: Ch 3 #5d (it factors to 1/4(x+8)^2+4, they factored out the 1/4 incorrectly), Ch 9 #7, Ch 2 #6 (wrong answer circled), Ch 6 #3 should say x can't equal -5 not -2.

Wednesday Jan 22 to Thursday Jan 23:  we went over more textbook review questions together.  Remember to bring your textbook in to your exam on Wednesday.

Tuesday Jan 21: Optional Re-test day

Monday Jan 20:  if you didn't hand in your CUSR letters on Friday, you need to do so today.  Also, you have to hand in THIS PAGE by the end of the day so I know what outcomes you will be re-testing tomorrow.  If you are absent from today's class, message me with your choices on Edsby by 3:30 today.  If I don't get your form or a message, I will assume you do not want to retest anything.
After discussing the above housekeeping issues, we went over some textbook questions together.

Friday Jan 17:  We started the exam review process today.  We went over some textbook questions together.

I need your CUSR data for the report card.  If you missed today's class, watch this video and send me your CUSR choices on Edsby.  If I don't hear from you by the end of next week, I will just use the same ones from the last report card (unless, of course, I feel like they need changing).

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:  By Monday, I need to know which outcomes you would like to try to re-test.  If I don't receive THIS PAGE back from you by 3:30 on Monday, I will assume you are not interested in re-testing anything.

Tuesday Sept 24:  we finished Lessons 2.1.2 and 2.1.3 on pages 10-12 in the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook.  The assignment for this section is textbook page 83 #8,10 -13,15,17,20, 21,24.  Check out this interactive unit circle. Reminder that the lesson on Thursday of last week also had an assignment from this textbook section.  Tomorrow is a work period, so you can work on both at the same time.  If you want to play with the Interactive Unit Circle, here is the link.

MISTAKES ON THE ANSWER KEY OF THE Chapter 1 Skill Practice Review:  #9a should be 1400, #13a should be -7174454.  #13b is NOT a bad question, it fits on my calculator just fine and the answer rounds nicely to 125.  Chapter 1 Word Problem Review:  #7 should be $12564.89 (if you call $1000 T1, then you are solving for t11).

Monday Sept 23:  TEST 1:  Arithmetic and Geometric Sequences and Series.  If you finish with time to spare, you could work on textbook page 83 #1-7,9,15-17, 20, but I will give you a work period on Wednesday, so please don't feel like you need to finish it for homework just yet.

Friday Sept 20:  we lost this class to the Terry Fox Run.  Reminder that you have a Chapter 1 test on Monday and a couple of reviews that I handed out on Wednesday that you can work on.  See Wednesday's update below for their answer keys.

Thursday Sept 19:  Any questions from the two reviews I handed out yesterday?  Then we're off onto Chapter 2!  I handed out the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook.  We went through the Lesson 2.0 Trigonometry Review on pages 2-3.  I don't generally hand out homework for this section, since students who were strong in MIAP last year, usually remember this topic pretty well,  IF, on the other hand, you are a student who comes to us from a different school in grade 10 (where they didn't spend much, or any time in right-angled trig), you can download and practice on this Right Angle Trigonometry Review (here is the key).  We went through lesson 2.1.1 in the in the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook.  If you WANT to get started on the homework for chapter 2, the assignment for this section is textbook page 83 #1-7,9,15-17, 20.  I emphasize the word 'WANT' since you will have time to work on the first couple of Chapter 2 assignments on Wednesday of next week (and you have a test to study for this weekend!), so you might want to save it for then.  While we're on the subject of the Chapter 1 test, if you blaze through the reviews I handed out yesterday and want more practice, go to the Review and Practice test pages at the end of Chapter 1 in the textbook.  There's plenty of practice questions in there.  We had a little time at the end of class, so we got started on Lesson 2.1.2, taking us to about the end of page 9.

Wednesday Sept 18:   we went over a few 1.5 homework problems.  Then we did the 1.5 Mini Quiz.  Then I handed out a Chapter 1 Skill Practice Review and a Chapter 1 Word Problem Review.  The files linked here have answer keys.  We spent a few munutes at the end of class looking at the biggest controversy in math over the last 20 years or so.  Here is the answer key for the Number Sequence Activity.

Tuesday Sept 17:   we did the 1.4 Mini-Quiz.  Then we went through the enrichment activity on the last page of the notes booklet together.   If you want to explore Fractals some more, here is the link I used in class.   After that, I gave the class a little more time to work on the 1.5 homework problems.

Monday Sept 16:  Monday Sept 16:  We went over some of the 1.4 homework problems.  Then we did the 1.5 Lesson in the Sequences and Series booklet This included a discussion of Zeno's Paradox.   The assignment for this section is textbook page 63 #1-5-8,11, 12, 14, 15 , 19, 20.  You'll get a little more work time tomorrow.

Friday Sept 13:   then we did the 1.3 Mini-Quiz  Then we had some time to work on yesterday's assignment for Lesson 1.4, Pages 53 #1-6, 8, 10, 11,13, 15-19.   We ended class by exploring the  Al's Allowance problem and the Pal Paysam legend.

Thursday Sept 12:   we went over a few homework problems from the page 39 assignment.  Then we did the 1.4 Lesson in the Sequences and Series booklet The assignment for this section is textbook Pages 53 #1-6, 8, 10, 11,13, 15-19.

Wednesday Sept 11:  we did the 1.2 Mini Quiz Then we had some time to work on the page 39 assignment from yesterday.  For anyone who is breezing through this stuff and is saying to themselves, "hey, I signed up for honours math because I wanted a challenge" - I have just the thing for you:  I handed out a Number Sequence Activity.   I won't hand out an answer key for it until Monday in case you want to try to solve some of it over the weekend.   I don't expect anyone to solve all of these questions! Think of it as a challenge or puzzle - NOT as curricular expectations!  If you enjoy this sort of challenge, you'll love participating in the math contests this year!

Tuesday Sept 10:  I started the class by seeing if anyone had any questions from last night's homework.    Then we did the 1.3 lesson in the  Sequences and Series booklet.  The assignment for this section is textbook P. 39 #1-10, 12, 13, 18, 20, 22, 23, 26, 27.

Monday Sept 9:  we checked to see if anyone had any issues with the page 16 homework from Friday.  Then I handed out a booklet of Chapter 1 Mini Quizzes.  We did the 1.1 Mini Quiz in class today (the key is at the end of the file - #5 has an error the correct answer is 47). Then we went through Lesson 1.2 in the Sequences and Series booklet.   The homework is textbook page 27 #1-7, 9,10,12,14,16,19,23.

Friday Sept 6:  We went over a few things on the grade 10 skill review sheet, then we looked at Lesson 1.1 in the Sequences and Series booklet.  The homework is textbook page 16 #1-11,15,19,21,24,25.  Also, if you need to, spend some time making sure that you understand how to do the material on the grade 10 skill review sheet

Thursday September 5: Welcome to Grade 11 Honours Pre-Calculus! Here is the course outline and an overview of the curriculum.  Here is a Grade 10 Skill Review, just to refresh some skills while I  hand out your first notes package, the  Sequences and Series booklet, as well as your textbook.    The questions on the Grade 10 Skill Review should be things you already know how to do, but don't panic if you need a little bit of refresher on those skills (definitely panic and run, don't walk to your counselor if you can't do any of it!).
