GRADE 12 ESSENTIAL MATH SLOT 5 SEMESTER 2

HOME FINANCE ANSWER KEY MISTAKES:  page 8 #1f should be $151 404, page 20 #5 should be $130 437.50

Thursday March 19:  For the first half of the class, we finshed up the notes and examples for Lesson 5:  Insurance on pages 33-36 of the Home Finance Notes Booklet. If you missed today's class, watch  this video  from the 30:00 minute mark to the end.  The remaining time in the class and all of Monday's class will be work time for pages 9, 13-14, 19-22, 26-28, and 37-38.

Wednesday March 18: Today we went through the Practice Lesson 3 problems together.  If you missed today's class here is a video of that part of the class. Then we started Lesson 5 in the  Home Finance Notes Booklet: Home Insurance, covering pages 29-33.  If you missed class today, here is a video of the lesson for you to catch up to us (we made it up to the 31:00 minute mark).  We didn't quite make it through the entire lesson.  We'll finish it off tomorrow and then give you work time.

Tuesday March 17:  Happy St. Patrick's Day! We started by finishing up Lesson 4 and land transfer tax.  If you missed today's class, here is a video of the lesson.  Then we had work time for the Mortgage Payments Hand In on page 9, the Pracitce Lesson #2 on page 1, the Hand-In Mortgage Payments #2 on page 13, the Practice Lesson #3 on pages 19-20, and the Hand In GDSR on pages 21-22.

Monday March 16:  we went through most of Lesson #4 on pages 14-15 of the  Home Finance Notes Booklet.  If you missed the class here is a video of the lesson..  We'll finish up the Land transfer tax part of the lesson tomorrow and then have work time.

Friday March 13:  we went through Lesson 3: GDSR on pages 15-18 in the Home Finance Booklet.  If you missed today's class, here is a video of the lesson.  We had a few minutes at the end of class to work, so you should be finishing the Mortgage Payments Hand In on page 9 and the Pracitce Lesson #2 on page 12. If you are done both of those, I will give you the numbers you need to do the Hand-In Mortgage Payments #2 on page 13.  If you are having trouble doing Practice Lesson 2, here is a video of me going through it.

Thursday March 12:  I gave the class some time to try the Practice Lesson 2 assignment on page 13 of the  Home Finance Booklet.  Then I went over it with the class and showed them how to use Excel to do the calculations - not really part of the curriculum any more, but it's a nice skill to have - if you ever get an office job, your chances of having to work with Excel are very high.  If you missed today's class, here is a video of me doing an example.  The time left in the class was to work on the Mortgage Payments Hand In on page 9 and the Pracitce Lesson #2 on page 12.

Wednesday March 11:  we went through the practice questions for lesson 1 on pages 6-8 of the  Home Finance Booklet.  You can keep working on page 9: "Hand In - Mortgage Payments #1" when you get a chance.  We went through Lesson 2 on pages 10-12.  If you missed today's class, here is a video of that part of the class (please note that the video ends saying that we'll use Excel do confirm the calculations, but you don't need to bother watching that video - being able to use Excel isn't manditory for this curiculum).  You can now work on the Practice Lesson 2 assignment on page 13 of the booklet.  If you finish that, go to "Hand-In Mortgage Payments #2" on page 14.  It will be due at the end of the unit.  I will give you more work time tomorrow.

Tuesday March 10:   we went through Examples 1 and 2 at the end of Lesson 1 (up to the end of page 5) in the Home Finance Booklet .   If you missed today's class, watch this lesson starting at the 34:00 markThe assignment for the lesson is in your Home Finance Booklet - it is the Practice Lesson 1 Worksheet on pages 6-8.  Please note the typo in #1, the mortgage should be for $165 000 NOT $155 000.  You can have the rest of the class to work on it. The answer key is on page 8.   If you don't finish pages 6-8 by the end of the period, they are homework.  We will go over them and continue into lesson 2 tomorrow.   If you finish that before the end of class, you can work on the Mortgage Payments Hand In on page 9.  At the end of the unit I will get you to hand in the pages of the booklet that say "hand in".

Monday March 9:  After a quick introduction and another chance to do this anonymous questionaire , we started our Home Finance unit.  We got started by thinking about how much it costs to buy a house using this online mortgage calculator and watching this video.  We used the video to fill in the blanks on this handout.   I handed out a Home Finance Booklet and we went through the first two pages of lesson 1.  I also handed out a Mortgage Amortization Table that you will need for the first assignment and a  Home Finance Formula Sheet that we will use for the whole unit.  We'll start the examples and calculations tomorrow.  No new assignment yet.   If you missed class today, here is a video of the lesson (our class today made it to the 34:00 mark of the video).

Friday March 6:  Geometry Test.  If you finish with time to spare, you can work on answering this anonymous questionaire to get us ready for our Home Finance unit.

Thursday March 5:  we went over the Quadrilaterals Review handout  (here is the answer key)  and the  Polygon Review Assignment (here is the key for that) After that, I gave the class time to work on this last Unit 1 Review (here is a key for it).    It's a good idea to use some time today to make your study sheet for tomorrow's test.

Wednesday March 4:  we went over Lesson 8 Practice Assignment, pages 17-18 of the Geo+Trig Workbook.  Then we had more time to work on the Quadrilaterals Review handout  (here is the answer key) and the Polygon Review Assignment (here is the key for that)  If you don't finish them, they are homework for tomorrow.  If you are finished, you can work on this last Unit 1 Review (here is a key for it).  We'll use tomorrow as a review day and test on Friday.  If anyone is interested in reading an article about the special tile shape that I was describing in class today, look here.

Tuesday March 3:  we had time to work on the Lesson 8 Practice Assignment, pages 17-18 of the Geo+Trig Workbook.  That one is homework if you can't finish it in class.  If you finished that, you could start on this Quadrilaterals Review handout .   After that you can work on the Polygon Review Assignment

Monday March 2:  we went through some of the questions in Practice Lessons 6 and 7 in the Geo+Trig Workbook.  Then we did the second part of Lesson 8:  Regular Polygons and Formulas, pages 21-23 of the Geometry and Trigonometry Notebook,  For the rest of the period, I gave the class time to work on the Lesson 8 Practice Assignment, pages 17-18 of the Geo+Trig Workbook.   If you missed the class or want to see the examples again, here is a video of the lesson.  At the end of class, I handed out the formula sheet for this unit.  I will hand it out again on test day (Friday), and don't forget, you still get to bring in a piece of paper to the test with any notes you might want written on it - front and back.

Friday Feb 27:  we started with an interesting drawing activity, then we had more work time to finish Assignments 6 and 7 in the  Geo+Trig Workbook.  If you aren't done them by the end of class, finish them for homework.  Then we went through the first part of Lesson 8:  Regular Polygons and Formulas, pages 19-20 of the Geometry and Trigonometry Notebook,  Then we watched this video and this video.  If you missed today's class, here is a link to a video of the lesson.

Thursday Feb 26:  We started by looking at a video that answers the question, "what is the centre of a triangle?"  If you missed class you can watch the video here.   Then we went through Lesson 7 (pages 17-18) in the Geometry and Trigonometry Notebook, which looked at more properties of Quadrilaterals.  Then we had time to work on Practice  Assignments 6 and 7 from the  Geo+Trig Workbook.   You'll get a little more work time tomorrow.  If you missed today's class, here is the lesson video.

Wednesday Feb 25:   SIN and COSINE LAW TEST.  If you finish with time to spare, you can work on the assignment from yesterday:  Assignment 6 (page 13) in the  Geo+Trig Workbook

Tuesday Feb 24: we went through lesson 6 (pages 14-16) in our Geometry and Trigonometry Notebook, which looked at Quadrilaterals.  You can now work on Practice Assignment 6 (if you missed class and need to download it, it is page 13 in the  Geo+Trig Workbook) if you feel you are all ready for tomorrow's Trigonometry test.  You might have some work time to finish working on it tomorrow after you finish the test.  If you missed today's class, here is the lesson video Don't forget to make a study sheet for tomorrow and some of you still need to hand in  the Cosine Law HAND IN Assignment (the file link has an answer key at the end of the file) and/or the Sine Law Hand In Assignment (here is the answer key) - Friday is your last chance to do that.

Monday Feb 23:  we had some time to work on the booklet of More Exam Trig Problems, then we went over them together (if you missed class today, here are the full solutions).  Then I handed out the Trig Review to get us ready for Wednesday's test (here are full solutions) and we had the rest of the class to work on it.  Reminder to make yourself a study sheet for test day and that some of you still need to hand in the Cosine Law HAND IN Assignment (the file link has an answer key at the end of the file) and/or the Sine Law Hand In Assignment (here is the answer key).  I'll still accept them for marks right up until the end of the day on Friday - after that, they count as zeros in your average

Friday Feb 20:   we started class by looking at this worksheet of  Trig Problems from Old Provincial Exams (the file link here has answers in case you missed class and need to go over these problems on your own).  Then we had time to work on this booklet of More Exam Trig Problems.  This can act as a good review for the first chapter and we will test it on Wednesday.  Reminder that some of you still need to hand in the Cosine Law HAND IN Assignment (the file link has an answer key at the end of the file) and/or the Sine Law Hand In Assignment (here is the answer key).  I'll still accept them for marks right up until the test day next week

Thursday Feb 19:  we started class with some time to try to finish up the Cosine Law HAND IN Assignment (the file link has an answer key at the end of the file).  If you don't finish it in class today, you should finish it for homework tonight and hand it in tomorrow.  I will also still accept the Sine Law Hand In Assignment (here is the answer key) that was due back on Tuesday if you can get it to me tomorrow.  Anyone who was done both hand-ins with time to spare got started on a booklet of More Exam Trig Problems.  We also looked at what your study sheet should look like for next week's test.

Wedensday Feb 18:  we started class with some time to finish up the Practice Lesson 5  worksheet  and then we went over it together.  Here is the key for it if you missed class and need to correct it yourself.  After that, we had time to work on this  Cosine Law HAND IN Assignment (the file link has an answer key at the end of the file).  You should have that handed in before the end of the week.  I will still accept the Sine Law Hand In Assignment (here is the answer key) that was due yesterday if you can finish that up today or tomorrow

Tuesday Feb 17:  we went over the  Practice Lesson 4  worksheet together. If you missed today's class, here is the answer key so you can go over it yourself.  After that, I gave the class time to work on the Practice Lesson 5  worksheet (here is the key for that one).   If you don't finish it in class today, I'll give you a little more work time tomorrow, then after that, you should finish it for homework.  Also, today was the deadline to hand in the Sine Law Hand In Assignment (here is the answer key) - I WILL accept it late if you can get it in before we finish the chapter and write the test.   If anyone does manage to finish all of that in class today, they can start on this  Cosine Law HAND IN Assignment (the file link has an answer key at the end of the file).   I'll give the class more time to work on that tomorrow, too.

Thursday Feb 12:  we went through Lesson 5 in the Geometry and Trigonometry Notebook, learning how (and when) to use the Cosine Law to solve for unknown angles.  If you missed class today, here is a video of today's lesson that you can use to fill in your notes and keep up with the class.  After that, we had work time to finish yesterday's Practice Lesson 4  worksheet (here is the answer key).  We will go over it on Tuesday, so if you don't finish it in class, it is homework.  If anyone is finished that, they can work on the Practice Lesson 5  worksheet (here is the key for that one).   I'll give you some class time on Tuesday to finish up that one.  If anyone does manage to finish that in class today, they can start on the  Cosine Law HAND IN Assignment (the file link has an answer key at the end of the file).  I'll give you time on Tuesday to work on those. Have a great long weekend!

Wednesday Feb 11: we started by going over the  Practice Lesson 3 worksheet.  If anyone missed today's class and wants to correct their work on their own, here is the answer key.  Then we went through Lesson 4 in the Geometry and Trigonometry Notebook, learning how (and when) to use the Cosine Law to solve for unknown sides.  Again if you missed class today, here is a video of today's lesson that you can use to fill in your notes and keep up with the class.  The last part of the class was work time.  Some people used it to finish up the Sine Law Hand In Assignment (here is the answer key) from yesterday.  If you aren't finished it yet, please hand it in no later than Tuesday.  People who are already done the hand in started working on the Practice Lesson 4  worksheet that I handed out today.  I'll give the class more work time for that tomorrow.

Tuesday Feb 10:  we started by going over the solutions for the Practice Lesson 2  worksheet.  Here is the answer key if you missed the class and need to correct it yourself.  We continued with some time to work on the Practice Lesson 3 worksheet.  If anyone is finished that, I handed out what will be our first hand in for marks - this Sine Law Assignment (here is the answer key).  As long as you are finished the Practice Lesson 3 quesitons, you have no homework tonight.  I'll give you more time tomorrow for the  Sine Law Assignment.
