Thursday Oct 13: Today we went over the last two examples of lesson 3.1b on page 16, then we did the 3.2 lesson in the Chapter 3 Quadratics notes package. This takes us up to the end of page 19 in the notes booklet. The homework for these lessons are textbook page 157 #1,2,4,6-10,12,13,15,18 and page 174 #1-14,19,21-23. I'm giving you tomorrow as work time for these.
Wednesday Oct 12: Today we did most of the 3.1b lesson in the Chapter 3 Quadratics notes package. This takes us up to the end of page 15 in the notes booklet. I left the examples on page 16 for you to try - we'll go over them tomorrow and then do the summary on page 17. The homework for this lesson is textbook page 157 #1,2,4,5a,6-10,12,13,15,18, but you don't have to start that until tomorrow. I'll be adding to that tomorrow, but then you will get some in-class work time.
Tuesday Oct 11: Sine Law and Cosine Law test. For anyone who finished early, I handed out this trinomial factoring practice page. I won't officially assign it until next week.
Friday Oct 10: Last call for any 2.3 or 2.4 problems before Tuesday's test. Then we finished up the last examples on the page 3 function review before going through lesson 3.1a on pages 5-10 of the Chapter 3 Quadratics notes package and discussing what makes quadratics so darned important that it takes up two chapters of the course. We're not ready for new homework yet, so you can spend time this weekend getting ready for Tuesday's Sine and Cosine Law test. Reminder that if you want more review, you can try the review and practice test on textbook Pages 126-130. Maybe spend a few minutes this weekend considering if you are interested in writing the CSMC or the COMC - registration deadlines for both are on Tuesday. Start bringing some graph paper to class for next week.
Thursday Oct 9: we checked to see if anyone has any homework issues from pages 108 or 119. Then we did the 2.3-2.4 Mini Quiz (the file link has a key). Then I handed out some Trig problems from old grade 12 Essential Math exams. The file here has a key if you missed class. If anyone is looking for more Sine or Cosine Law practice to work on over the weekend, there is review and a practice test on textbook Pages 126-130. We ended the class with we did the first 3 pages of the Chapter 3 Quadratics notes package, covering a brief review of functions. No homework for that.
Wednesday Oct 10: I let the class have work time for the page 108 and 119 assignments.
Tuesday Oct 7: after going over a couple of textbook page 108 questions, we did the notes and examples for lesson 2.4: Cosine Law, on pages 24-25 of the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook. Example 23 has a typo, the bottom line should be 75 units. The assignment for this section is textbook page 119 #1 - 6,7, 10, 12, 17,23, 24, 26, 29. I'll give you work time tomorrow.
Monday Oct 6: we finished up our discussion of the Congruent Triangle Activity. (if you missed last class and need instructions on how to do it, work your way through this power point). Then after a quick check to see if anyone was having trouble with the page 108 assignment from last week, we did the Lesson 2.3B notes on pages 21-23 of the the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook. The assignment for this section is textbook page108 #6-9,11, 17,23.
Friday Oct 4: we did the Congruent Triangle Activity. I don't have a video for this activity, but if you missed class and want to try it for yourself, you can work your way through this power point that goes step by step on drawing the triangles. Your only new homework for this activity are the two questions I left you with at the end of the activity. Reminder that you should be done textbook page 108 #1-5, 10, 12, 13, 15,18, 20 for Tuesday. Have a great weekend!
Thursday Oct 2: Ch 2.1 and 2.2 (Outcomes T1 and T2) Test today. If students finished with time to spare, students can work on the textbook page 108 assignment from Monday (due for this coming Monday). Bring a protractor and a ruler to tomorrow's class.
Wednesday Oct 1: We went over some of the page 96 assignment questions together. Then we did the 2.2 Practice Quiz and this 2.2B Practice Quiz. If you are looking for last minute practice for tomorrow's test, you could always try the following review questions in the textbook: page 126 #1-10 and page 129 #1-3, 6. Bring a protractor and a ruler to Friday's class. If you want to re-watch the video I showed in class, here is the link.
Tuesday Sept 30: no school today. Truth and Reconciliation Day
Monday Sept 29: I gave the class some time to work on the page 96 assignments from Friday and the Trig Equations Worksheets . If anyone is already finished all of that, there is 2.1 and 2.2 review on textbook page 126 that you can start. After some work time, we did the notes on Lesson 2.3A, pages 19-20 in the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook. The assignment for this section is textbook page 108 #1-5, 10, 12, 13, 15,18, 20, but you don't have to be done this assignment until next week, so please keep your focus on Thursday's T1 and T2 test (make sure you know your unit circle!). Reminder that we test Chapters 2.1 and 2.2 Thursday. Also reminder that there is no school tomorrow.
Friday Sept 26: we started with a unit circle activity, then we went through Lesson 2.2.2 on pages 16-17 in the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook. The assignment for this section is textbook page 96 #1-16,18,21-24,29 (this is the combination of the two assignments from pages 15 and 17 of the notes booklet) and these Trig Equations Worksheets that I handed out. Get some of this done over the weekend, but I will give you some work time on Monday.
Thursday Sept 25: We started by seeing if anyone wanted me to go over any of the Page 83 questions from Tuesday's assignment together. After that, we went through Lesson 2.2.1 on pages 14-15 of the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook. The assignment for this lesson is page 96 #1-6,11,12-15, 22-24. I'll add to that assignment after tomorrow's lesson. Reminder that you also have the Exact Values of Trig Ratios worksheet you should do for extra practice (you could save that for the weekend if you want).
Wednesday Sept 24: We started by going over some questions from the page 83 assignment from last Thursday together. Then we did a 2.1.1 practice quiz (key attached). After that we had time to finish the rest of the page 83 assignment: #8,10 -13, 22,23 and I handed out this Exact Values of Trig Ratios worksheet. If you can get all of these correct with no calculator or notes to help you, then you have this mastered.
Tuesday Sept 23: we kept on rolling through lesson 2.1.3, pages 10-12 of the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook. The assignment for this section is textbook page 83 #8,10 -13, 22,23. I will give you some time tomorrow to work on this and say that it needs to be done for Thursday. If you want to play with the Interactive Unit Circle, here is the link. Reminder that page 83 #1-7,9,15-17, 20 should be done for tomorrow.
Monday Sept 22: we looked at some very special triangles, and then we went through Lesson 2.1.2 on pages 7-9 in the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook. We need to keep going in the notes booklet before tackling the next homework assignment, but remember that the 2.1.1 lesson from Thursday had an assignment from textbook page 83 #1-7,9,15-17, 20. I'll let you work on that a bit tomorrow and say that it's due for Wednesday.
Friday Sept 19: we lose this class to the Terry Fox Run. See you on Monday!
Thursday Sept 18: I handed out the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook. We went through the Lesson 2.0 Trigonometry Review on pages 2-3. From this refresher, you should be able to finish the Right Angle Trigonometry Review (here is the key) that I handed out yesterday. Then we continued through lesson 2.1.1 in the in the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook. The assignment for this section is textbook page 83 #1-7,9,15-17, 20. I'll give you until Monday to get this assignment done (and finish up the Right Angle Trigonometry Review (here is the key).
Wednesday Sept 17: R9 and R10 TEST. If you finish with time to spare, I handed out this Right Angle Trigonometry Review (here is the key) that you can work on. If you need some refreshers on how to do the trig, don't panic - we'll review that in tomorrow's lesson.
Tuesday Sept 16: Tuesday Sept 16: we went over a few 1.5 homework problems. Then we did the 1.5 Mini Quiz. Then I gave the class some time to work on the reviews that I handed out yesterday. If you blaze through those and want more practice, go to the Review and Practice test pages at the end of Chapter 1 in the textbook. There's plenty of practice questions in there. Here (finally) is the answer key for the Number Sequence Activity. If you want to see a video about the See-and-say sequence, here it is. Test tomorrow.
Monday Sept 15: we went back to lesson 1.4 in the Sequences and Series booklet to go through how to read sigma notation, then jumped back to lesson 1.5 and finished the two examples that we didn't go through on Friday. Then I gave the class some time to finish up the 1.5 assignment from Friday, or work on these handouts: a Chapter 1 Skill Practice Review and a Chapter 1 Word Problem Review. The files linked here have answer keys, but there are a couple of errors: on the Chapter 1 Skill Practice Review: #2c, should read: " #9a should be 1400, #13a should be -7174454. #13b is NOT a bad question, it fits on my calculator just fine and the answer rounds nicely to 125. Chapter 1 Word Problem Review: #7 should be $12564.89 (if you call $1000 T1, then you are solving for t11). We spent a few munutes at the end of class looking at the biggest controversy in math over the last 20 years or so.
Friday Sept 12: we went over some of the page 53 homework problems, then we did the 1.4 Mini-Quiz. Then we did the 1.5 Lesson in the Sequences and Series booklet. This included a discussion of Zeno's Paradox. The assignment for this section is textbook page 63 #1-5-8,11, 12, 14, 15 , 19, 20. This should be finished for Monday, but I'll give you 20 minutes or so of class time to work.
Thursday Sept 11: Then we went over some problems from the page 39 assignment from yesterday, then we did the the 1.3 Mini-Quiz. Then we had some time to work on page 53 #1-6, 8,10,11,13,15-19. If you don't finish the questions in class, finish it tonight for homework.
Wednesday Sept 10: we did the 1.2 Mini Quiz. Then I gave the class some time to work on yesterday's page 1.3 homework on textbook page 39 #1-10, 12, 13, 18, 20, 22, 23, 26, 27. Then we did the brief lesson for the 1.4 section of the Sequences and Series booklet. If you finish the page 39 assignment and want to work ahead, the 1.4 assignment is page 53 #1-6, 8,10,11,13,15-19. I'll assign it officially tomorrow.
Tuesday Sept 9: we started with the 1.1 Mini Quiz from the booklet I handed out today of Chapter 1 Mini Quizzes. Please DON'T do the rest of those quizzes for homework! They are meant to be done in class as practice for the upcomming test. If you missed class and want to do it yourself, the answer key is at the end of the file link. Then we did the 1.3 lesson in the Sequences and Series booklet. The assignment for this section is textbook page 39 #1-10, 12, 13, 18, 20, 22, 23, 26, 27. I'll give you some more class time for this assignment tomorrow. For anyone who is breezing through this stuff and is saying to themselves, "hey, I signed up for honours math because I wanted a challenge" - I have just the thing for you: I handed out a Number Sequence Activity. I won't hand out an answer key for it until Monday in case you want to try to solve some of it over the weekend. I don't expect anyone to solve all of these questions! Think of it as a challenge or puzzle - NOT as curricular expectations! If you enjoy this sort of challenge, you'll love participating in the math contests this year!
Monday Sept 8: we checked to see if anyone had any other issues with the Grade 10 Skill Review. Today is the last time we'll go over the old skills in class, so after today, if you are still struggling with these skills, you should consider coming in over noon hours to do some remedial work so you can be successful in this course going forward. After that we checked in to see if anyone was stuck on any of the page 16 homework questions that I assigned on Friday, we will do a practice quiz on this lesson tomorrow. Then we went through Lesson 1.2 in the Sequences and Series booklet. The homework is textbook page 27 #1-7, 9,10,12,14,16,19,23. I'll give you some time in class to work on this tomorrow.
Friday Sept 5: We finished our look at the course outline and I fielded a few more questions about the question on the grade 10 skill review sheet, then we looked at Lesson 1.1 in the Sequences and Series booklet. The homework for Monday is textbook page 16 #1-11,15,19,21,24,25. Also, Monday will be the last time I use class time to help you understand how to do the material on the grade 10 skill review sheet, so make sure you have tried it all by then.
Thursday Sept 4: Welcome to Honours Pre-Calculus! Here is the course outline and an overview of the curriculum. Here is a Grade 10 Skill Review, just to refresh some skills while I hand out your first notes package, the Sequences and Series booklet, as well as your textbook. The questions on the Grade 10 Skill Review should be things you already know how to do, but don't panic if you need a little bit of refresher on those skills (definitely panic and run, don't walk to your counselor if you can't do any of it!). If you want to work on it some more tonight, great - but if you want to finish it up over the weekend, we'll go over it on Monday.
