Monday June 11:  Chapter 8 and 9 Test (and R11 re-test) today.  UPDATE TO FRIDAY'S IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT.  The final calculation of your term mark (except for the test you wrote today, of course) was handed out in class today.  It may have been slightly different than the one I showed you on Friday (it was missing the results from test 6b, which tested R3 and R5).  So I will extend the deadline to tomorrow to have you declare which outcomes you may want to re-test on the Options test on Thursday.  If you already handed in your choices on  THIS OPTION TEST SELECTION SHEET and I don't hear from you by the end of the day tomorrow to alter those choices, then that is what you are doing.  If you didn't hand in the selection sheet and I don't hear from you by the end of the day tomorrow, I will assume that you don't want to re-test anything and that for you, Thursday's class will be independent study time.
If you are one of the two people who missed the Chapter 8,9, and R11 test this morning, you MUST do those outcomes on the Thursday options test - you have no choice.

Friday June 8:  work period.  I went over a few examples with the class.  Test Monday.  See yesterday's update for review assignments.
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:  If you missed class today, download THIS OPTION TEST SELECTION SHEET and get it handed to me on Monday, or email me and tell me which outcomes your would like to re-test on Thursday's Outcome Test.  If you don't get choices to me by the end of the day on Monday, I will assume that you do not want to retest any of the outcomes.  IF YOU MISS the Chapter 8,9 and R11 TEST ON MODAY, you will have NO CHOICE but to write the alternate version of that test on Thursday - you will not be eligible for the Options test.

Thursday June 7: We went over pages 18 and 19 of the Chapter 9:Linear and Quadratic Inequalities booklet.  Just review for Monday's test for the rest of this class and tomorrow's class.  For  Chapter 8 do booklet pages 10-15 and if you want more review, do textbook pages 457 #3 and 459 #1,2,4,5,6,7,9.  For Chapter 9 do booklet pages 20-25 and if you want more review, do page 501 #1,2,4,6,7,11-13 and page 504 #1,2,4-8.  For the R11 retest, there are the two handouts from yesterday (page 1-with key and page 2 - here is the key for page 2) and if you want more do textbook page 412 #15-17 and page 413 #4,5

Monday April 30:  People who missed Friday's lesson due to absence or because they had to write Thursday's test need to go through the video lesson from Friday, do the examples and the homework.  Today's we went through Lesson 5.3: Solving Radical Equations on pages 18-20 of the Radical Expressions and Equations booklet.  Your homework for tomorrow is page 21 of the booklet.  For Wednesday, do textbook page 300 #1,3-10,11,14,15,18-20,26

Friday April 27:  My guest teacher ran the Lesson 5.2(B) video of Dividing Radicals and Rationalizing Denominators in the Radical Expressions and Equations booklet while the class took down the notes and examples.  Then there was time to work on pages 15-16 of the booklet (here is the answer key).  If you are finished, work on the textbook assignment:  Page 289 #1-11, 13,14,17,20,22,23,26 for Tuesday.

Thursday April 26:  R5 R3 Quadratics test.  If you finish early, work on page 12 in the notes package (here is the answer key).

Wednesday April 25:  we did a practice quiz with R3 review questions for the R3/R5 test tomorrow (here is its answer key).  Then I took student requests for word problems.   Then we went back to the  Radical Expressions and Equations booklet and did lesson 5.2 A (pages 10,11).  We'll hold off on the textbook assignment at the bottom of page 11 for now (since you have a test tomorrow).  We'll assign page 12 in the notes package for Friday instead (here is the answer key).

Tuesday April 24:  we did some review questions for the R5/R3 test, then we worked on pages 8-9 of the Radical Expressions and Equations booklet(here is the answer key)  The rest of those pages are due for tomorrow.  If anyone has any bright ideas about page 278 #21, let me know!  I can't seem to solve it without grade 12 stuff!

Monday April 23: Remember that we test R5 (and re-test R3) on Thursday.  I handed out R5 reviews last week:  Applications of Quadratics Problems (Here is an answer key)  and a Maximum and Minimum Problems worksheet.  Today I handed out an R3 Review . Then we went back into the new unit: Radical Expressions and Equations.  We finished lesson 5.1(A) and 5.1(B) and assigned the two textbook assignments from the end of each lesson: Page 278 #1-6,8-11,14,15,17,20-23.

Thursday April 19: we started the new unit:  Radical Expressions and Equations.  We went through the introduction and the first half of  lesson 5.1(A). The video of the lesson is here.  We'll get to the second half of that lesson on Monday.  No new assignment on the new booklet yet.  This is so you can spend the time this weekend focusing on the Quadratics problems.  See yesterday for the texbook problem numbers that you should have tried by now.  You can now work on the Applications of Quadratics Problems (Here is an answer key)  and a Maximum and Minimum Problems worksheet.  We'll take a couple of minutes on Monday going over a couple of those problems.  If you want more Quadratics review, remember that you have the Beacon Quadratics booklet we have now covered the material for the entire book.

Wednesday April 18:  R1, R4 (Factoring and completing the square) test.  People who finished early could work on the textbook assignment: pg 258 #4,5, pg 259 #10,11,16,17, pg 260 #20-22, pg 262 #11-14.  I also handed out some extra R5 (word problem) practice:  Applications of Quadratics Problems (Here is an answer key)  and a Maximum and Minimum Problems worksheet.  Both will be excellent review for next week's test (now moved to next Thursday).

Tuesday April 17: no class today - grade 11 field trip

Monday April 16: We started with a Completing the Square review (here is the key) as we get ready for Wednesday's test.  Then we finished up the examples on pages 17 and 18 of the Chapter 4 - Quadratic Functions booklet.  Reminder that the textbook problem solving assignment questions  from Friday will be due after the test on Wednesday.

Friday April 13: we did the examples on pages 14-17 of the Chapter 4 - Quadratic Functions booklet.  The new assignment for that lesson is textbook: pg 258 #4,5, pg 259 #10,11,16,17, pg 260 #20-22, pg 262 #11-14.  This assignment is material that will not be tested until after the next test, so we'll say that this assignment isn't due until Thursday.  So if you want to focus on studying for Wednesday's test, you can do that.  Recall that I handed out a  Factoring Review worksheet and a  Factoring Practice booklet (see Thursday's update for instructions).  If you want to review completing the square, you can do textbook page 259 #13-15 and don't forget to go over your last test to see what your mistakes were!

Thursday April 12:  I handed out a  Factoring Review for next week's test, as well as an additional (optional)  Factoring Practice booklet.  The booklet is in two parts, the first is old test pages (with answers) and the second has grade 10 level factoring practice for anyone who is finding this stuff difficult and needs to brush up on old skills.  We then went back to the notes and examples in the Chapter 4 - Quadratic Functions booklet.  We did the examples on page 8, 11, and 13, and we started page 14 but I made a minor error (sorry about that!) so we'll look at it again tomorrow.  For tonight, work on the factoring assignment and Page 254 #1-9

Wednesday April 11: we started with some factoring review.  Then we started the examples on pages 7 and 8 of the  Chapter 4 - Quadratic Functions booklet. We'll finish that and get back to the quadratic formula tomorrow.  Tuesday April 10:  we did a practice quiz on all things quadratic up to yesterday's lesson.  Here it is if you missed the class (it has a key at the back).  Then we did notes from pages 12 and 13 of the Chapter 4 - Quadratic Functions booklet.  We didn't quite finish to the end of page 13, so we will pick it up there tomorrow.  New assignment is textbook page 254 #1-7,14,22

Monday April 9:  After handing back last week's test, we went over using completing the square to solve for x in unfactorable quadratic equations.   I derived the quadratic formula (you can re-watch it here if you missed it) and we did Lesson 4.4 (here is the video) and the notes/examples on pages 10-11.  We didn't get far enough yet to do the next assignment, so you should take tonight to make sure that you are completely finished the homework from Friday and go over your test.  We will re-test both R3 and R4 soon.

Friday April 6 we started the new booklet: Chapter 4 - Quadratic Functions by going over our factoring skills from grade 10 and extending them with advanced grade 11 techniques.  We went though pages 2,4,5 and stared page 6.  Your assignment for Monday is to finish page 6 (here is the answer key)  and do textbook page 229 #1-10.

Thursday April 5: QUADRATICS TEST  (R3, R4)

Wednesday April 4: our class was interrupted by a drill so we just used the time remaining to work on the In-Class review at the end of the Chapter 3 Quadratics notes packagehere is the answer key.  If you are done that, you can work on the other practice quiz that I handed out yesterday (it has a key at the end of the file).  If you are still wanting for more review, you can keep working through pages 1-35 in the Beacon Quadratics booklet.

Tuesday April 3:  we continued to work on the Chapter 3.1 and 3.2  practice quiz (the answer key is at the end of the file).  Then we went back to the Chapter 3 Quadratics notes package, and went over pages 29-30 (here is the answer key).  Then we went over some textbook questions from pages 174 and 240.  You can now do the Review on pages 33-34 of the notes package.  I also handed out another practice quiz that you can try (it has a key at the end of the file).  If you are still wanting for more review, you can keep working through pages 1-35 in the Beacon Quadratics booklet.

Monday April 2:  Welcome back, everyone!  We started by handing back the T3 Optional Test and then spent a few minutes warming up with a Chapter 3.1 and 3.2  practice quiz.  We will continue working on that tomorrow (the file posted has a key at the end if you want a sneak peek at the answers).  Then we did Lesson 3.3 Completing the Square.  I added my own example to the notes on page 25 of your Chapter 3 Quadratics notes package then we did pages 26,27, and 28 together.  Assignment:  do pages 29,30 in the notes booklet and textbook page 240 #1-3,6,7,9,10,12,14,16,17 for tomorrow.

Friday March 23:  We filled in the blanks on page 20 of the  Chapter 3 Quadratics notes package as a warm up, then we did the examples from pages 21-24  I handed out another resource for Quadratics that we will use for assignments in addition to your textbook.  We'll call it the Beacon Quadratics booklet.  Your assignment over the break is textbook Page 174 #11-14,19,21,22 (the notes package has more questions than this listed, but if you did your homework from Tuesday night, then you are done them already).  Optional assignment:  As a review of the material we have done so far in this unit, with some really cool applications, you can work through pages #1-30 of the Beacon Quadratics booklet.  Even if you don't do it all, you should check out the links and videos, they are very fun!  Speaking of videos, if you are confused by any of this stuff or you need to catch up on any classes missed, the break is a good time to re-watch the lesson videos.

Thursday March 22: while some worked on the optional T3 Re-test, everyone else worked on the textbook assignment from yesterday, or the Quadratic Transformation Worksheet that I handed out today (here is the answer key).

Wednesday March 21:  today we finished up to page 19 in the  Chapter 3 Quadratics notes package.  New assignment:  textbook page 157 #1-9,11-13,20-22 due for Friday.  Reminder that tomorrow is the optional re-test for T3 (here is the REVIEW - here is the key).

Tuesday March 20: we started with a warm up of more factoring review/equation solving, this time with perfect square trinomials (remember those?).  Here is a pic of the examples we used and here they are solved.   Then we went over some examples of from the page 174 homework.  I didn't get to a new lesson today, so I will just re-assign page 174 #1-3,4-10,23 for tomorrow.  You could also spend some time tonight on the REVIEW for T3, (here is the key) if you are going to try the retest on Thursday.

Monday March 19:  after another factoring and equation solving warm up, we did the examples on pages 9-13.  New assignment is Page 174 #1-3,4-10,23 for tomorrow.  I also handed out a REVIEW for T3, (here is the key) since we will do an optional re-test on Thursday.

Thursday March 15:  I handed back test 3, then we started with a factoring and equation solving warm up, then did the notes and examples on pages 7-8 of the  Chapter 3 Quadratics notes package.  We didn't get far enough for a new assignment yet, which might be a good thing - some of you really need to spend some time mastering the T2 and T3 outcomes from test 3.  For a few people the marks were really, really low.  Go back to the notes and watch the T2 and T3 videos.  Then go back and DO the assigned work.  The T2 concept of applying trigonometry to angles in a variety of positions around a coordinate axis and in the unit circle are KEY ideas going into grade 12 Pre-Cal.

Wednesday March 14:  we were missing too much of the class due to field trip to keep going on the new lesson, so we  started with a warm up to review some grade 9 and 10 skills:  foiling, factoring, and graphing (here is a picture of it if you want to re-try them).  Then we went over pages 5 and 6 and did the notes on the top half of page 7.  Then we stopped with no new assignment.  That gave us some free time so for fun, so as a tribute to the late Stephen Hawking, who helped all of us non-professional scientists ponder the sometimes weird, counter-intuitive nature of the universe, we talked about the Grandi Series  and started to watch this video.

Tuesday March 13: we started Chapter 3 - Quadratic Functions today.  We started with a quick equation solving activity that reminded us that sometimes equations are not solvable, and that this means something  - you can make conclusions about the nature of the equation based on the way it doesn't solve.  Then we handed out the Chapter 3 Quadratics notes package and did the notes on pages 1 to 4.  Your assignment for tomorrow is to finish the example pages 5 and 6.  The lesson can be viewed here - it's the first video for outcome R3.

Monday March 12:  Test 3:  T2,T3,R10  here is a T2 Review   and you can find lots of R10 review in the second half of this Chapter 1 Review Booklet.

Friday March 9:  we went over the Sine Law and Cosine Law handouts  (here are the answer keys) and a few textbook problems.  We also went over some T2 and R10 review.  Test Monday.  See yesterday's update for more review material you can use this weekend.

Thursday March 8: we did a 3.3 Mini Quiz (answer key is at the end of the file), then we went over the   No new lesson.  Tomorrow we will also do some review for Monday's test.  See above for reviews of T2 and R10.  To review the T3 material, you can do Page 127 #11-24.  Extra T2 review can be found on page 126 #6-10.  You can do a T2 and T3 practice test on page 129 #3-17.

Wednesday March 7: we looked at Lesson 2.3B on pages 21-23 of the Trigonometry Notebook, the ambiguous case of Sine Law (when you are given A.S.S. and the opposite S is shorter than the adjacent S).  Your new homework is page 108 #6-9,11,17,23.  Reminder that the Sine Law and Cosine Law handouts should now be done (here are the answer keys), but after today's lesson, you should be able to re-examine

Tuesday March 6: we went over #15 on the page 108 assignment (it has a typo in some of your textbooks: 1 Angstrom = 0.0000001 mm, not 0.01 mm!) then we did the Cosine Law and Sine Law  examples from pages 25-26 of the Trigonometry Notebook.  Reminder that the Sine Law and Cosine Law handouts are due tomorrow (here are the answer keys).  If you are ready to work ahead, the next assignment is textbook page 119 #1-7,10,12,17,23,24,26,29.

Monday March 5:  we did an example from the Page 108 Sine Law assignment from last week (it was due today).  Then we started lesson 2.4, page 24 of the Trigonometry Notebook on the Cosine Law.  If you missed class, you can watch the video here.  We will do the examples on pages 25-26 tomorrow.  New assignment are Sine Law and Cosine Law handouts (here are the answer keys).  They will be due on Wednesday.

Friday March 2: TEST 2:  T1, T2, and a retest of R9.  Reminder that the Sine Law assignment:  textbook page 108 #1-5,10,12,13,15,18,20 is due Monday.

Thursday Mar 1:  we did an interesting proof of the relationship between sin, cos, and tan.  We did a trig equation worksheet together.  Then we went over some textbook questions from page 96 and the review sections.  T1,T2,R9 test is tomorrow.  If you want one last review of T1 and T2, do textbook page 126 #1-9 and page 129 #1-3.  See above instructions for more R9 Review.

Wednesday Feb 28:  we did a question from last night's homework - I'll do a couple more in class tomorrow, to prepare for Friday's test.  Reminder that the test will only cover outcomes T1 and T2 of the new unit (and R9 of the old unit).  Today's lesson is not being tested until next week.  Then we did Lesson 2.3A: Sine Law (pages 19-20) in the  Trigonometry Notebook.  The assignment for that lesson is textbook page 108 #1-5,10,12,13,15,18,20 which will be due Monday.

Monday Feb 26:  Oops!  On Friday I had completely forgotten about the special presentation in the gym this morning that will cost us our class.  That bumps the assignments from Friday are now due tomorrow (page 83) and I won't assign page 96 officially until tomorrow.  The test moves from Thursday to Friday (see above).

Friday Feb 23: we up Lesson 2.1.3 on pages 11 and 12 the Trigonometry Notebook.  For Monday, you should be done textbook page 83 #8,10-13,22,23. I went over #13 in class today.  Then we did the brief lesson 2.2.1 on Trig Ratios from pages 14-15.  This means that if you are done the page 83 assignment, you can start on Page 96 #1-6,11-15,22-24, which will be assigned on Monday.  Only one more lesson before the test next week.

Thursday Feb 22:  we finished up (almost all of) Lesson 2.2 and we now (hopefully) have a working understanding of the unit circle.  We are up to page 10 in the Trigonometry Notebook.  For Monday, do textbook page 83 #8,10-13,22,23.  For tomorrow, do a nice, pretty copy of the unit circle on page 11 of your notes booklet.

Monday March 19: I went over some examples from pages 22-27.  You can now do all of the  4.4 Handout Sheet and if you want more practice, textbook page 211 #1-3,4,5,7-11,13,18,C3,C4.  Hey, thanks to Maddie another answer key error on the 4.3 worksheet was discovered.  #4d should be 13/12 not 5/12! Another error on 4.4 Part 1 #1b - he answer should be -135 and -225.

Thursday March 15: MY SINCEREST APOLOGIES for today's class - UGH - I completely got turned around in my head as to how to deal with domains of theta that go from negative to positive.  About 30 seconds after class, it dawned on me what my mistake in logic was - D'OH!  I want a mulligan (a do-over) on that lesson.  So on Monday, I promise I will do a much better job of the examples on pages 22-23 and beyond.  Other than that, we went over a few questions from the  4.3 Handout Sheet (answer key error on #1h: it should be undefined) and pages 187 and 201.  Despite my bumbling, you should still be able to start on the 4.4 Handout Sheet.  You can do #1 (a,b,d), #2 (a) and textbook page 202 #10,11 for Monday.  The rest of the 4.4 Handout sheet will be doable after Monday's lesson.  If you are finding things confusing (I did!), re-watch the lesson and go through the notes again, step by step.

Wednesday March 14: we went over a couple of the questions on the 4.2 Handout Sheet, then we did pages 20-22 of the Trigonometry and Unit Circle notes package (you need to finish the last 2 examples on page 22 yourself).  New assignment is the  4.3 Handout Sheet if want more practice do textbook page 187 #4-6,16,C1 and page 201 #1,2,3,6 for tomorrow.

Tuesday March 13: I handed back the last test.  We went over a few questions from the 4.1  and 4.2 Handout Sheets.  Then we started the 4.3 lesson on the unit circle.  We did the notes and examples on pages 11-19 of the Trigonometry and Unit Circle notes package Your new assignment is to finish questions 2e,3,4 on the 4.2 Handout Sheet and do   the 4.3 Handout Sheet.  If you want more practice, do textbook page 187 #4-6,16,C1.  Tomorrow's lesson is smaller, so I will give you some work time and today's assignment won't be due until Thursday (but I will add to it a bit).

Monday March 12: we went over some problems from the textbook page 175 assignment.  There is a 4.1 handout sheet that you should do for tomorrow.  Then we went over the first part of Lesson 4.2, notes from pages 10-12 of the Trigonometry and Unit Circle notes package.  For homework, do the 4.2 Handout Sheet.  If you want extra practice, do textbook page 186 #1-3 and page 202 #8,13.

Friday March 9: we started the new unit Trigonometry and the Unit Circle (chapter 4 in the textbook).  I handed out the Trigonometry and Unit Circle notes package and we did the first 2 lessons, pages 3-9 (video is here).  It sounds like a lot, but they were short and much of it reviews concepts from MPC30S.  New assignment is textbook page 175 #1-13, C1-C3 (this combines the two lessons' assignments).  In the booklet, we'll skip the page 4 activity (you should have done that in grade 7) and settle for the more elegant classical approaches explained here and here. If you want a more modern approach to calculating/generating decimals of pi, there are lots of ways, but this one is super cool.

Thursday March 8: TEST 2: CHAPTERS 2 & 3 THURSDAY MARCH 8.
