ARCHIVE for Semester 1 - 2023-2024:
SLOT 1B - MCI45S - INTRODUCTION TO CALCULUS (ARCHIVE)
I have a print out you can pick up from me with your test scores and overall Unit averages.
Remember that I will calculate your final grade by averaging together your three best Units out of the 4. Unfortunately, There is no way for me to make Edsby show that as your final grade, so I created a column called FINAL GRADE. That column will be the calculated result of averaging together your three best unit scores.
Good luck on the rest of your exams!
2.8: Page 11 #1 (a,b,c,d,f,h), 2(a,b), 3,6,8 and page 33 #1-3
Wednesday Jan 24: we worked on exam review today. If I don't receive this form back by 3:30 today, I will assume that you have decided not to write a re-test tomorrow.
TUESDAY JAN 23: CHAPTER 7 TEST. I handed out this form for students to select which unit test they would like to re-test next week. This is optional. If I don't receive this form back by Wednsday at 3:30, I will assume that you have decided not to write a re-test.

CHAPTER 6 TEST TUESDAY DEC 19
Monday Dec 18: Work/ask questions time to finish up the 6.4-6.6 Homework Assignment (here is the answer key) and start working on the Chapter 6 Review (here is the answer key) - there are TWO typos: #11a has the line going the wrong way (so just ignore that question), and on #13, change "at LEAST 10 protractors" to "at MOST 10 protractors" you won't get the region on the answer key (you get a little triangle) but it's a more sensible answer!
Friday Dec 15: I went over a couple questions from the Page 330 #1,2,5 and page 344 #11-14 assignments, then we had work time for the 6.4-6.6 Homework Assignment (here is the answer key). Anyone finished can start on the Chapter 6 Review (here is the answer key).
Thursday Dec 14: we had some time to work on the Page 330 #1,2,5 and page 344 #11-14 assignments, then we did a 6.3 ACC. I also handed out a 6.4-6.6 Homework Assignment (here is the answer key). We will have some work time to finish it up tomorrow.
Wednesday Dec 13: After a 6.2 ACC, we went through lesson 6.4-6.6, pages 14-17 of the Ch 6: Systems of Linear Inequalities Notes Booklet. Click here for the video of the lesson. The textbook assignment for this lesson is Page 330 #1,2,5 and page 344 #11-14. You will get some work time tomorrow.
Tuesday Dec 12: After a 6.1 ACC (here is the solution),we finished up the last 6.3 example on page 13 of the Ch 6: Systems of Linear Inequalities Notes Booklet. If you missed today's class, watch from about the 20:00 mark of this video to the end. After that, we had work time for textbook page 317 #1-2 (use paper and pencil), # 3,5-7 (use technology).
Monday Dec 11: First we checked in to see if anyone had any questions about textbook page 303. Then we went back to this handout and reviewed the graphing that you learned how to do in grade 10. Then we went through the 6.2-6.3 lesson on pages 9-12 of the Ch 6: Systems of Linear Inequalities Notes Booklet. We started the example on page 13, but we'll have to finish it tomorrow. Here is a video of the first part of the lesson and here is the video of the second part of the lesson (we made it up to the 20 minute mark). The assignment for this section is textbook page 317 #1-2 (use paper and pencil), # 3,5-7 (use technology). You'll get some work time tomorrow.
Friday Dec 8: First we finished off Lesson 6.1 in the Ch 6: Systems of Linear Inequalities Notes Booklet. If you missed the class start this video at the 38 minute mark. After that, I gave the class work time for textbook page 303 #1-5,9,10,12.
Thursday Dec 7: today, we continued lesson 6.1 in the Ch 6: Systems of Linear Inequalities Notes Booklet. Here is the video for the first part of the lesson (start at the 16 minute mark) and the video of the 2nd part of the lesson we made it to about the 38 minute mark). The assignment for this part of lesson 6.1 is textbook page 303 #1,2,4,5. I'll add to this tomorrow once we finish the rest of Lesson 6.1, then give you some work time. You should be bringing graph paper to class from here on in. For #1 and 5, graph with pencil and graph paper. For all other questions, use technology to graph, then just sketch the result. For fun: if you want another (animated!) version of the Infinity Hotel (a.k.a the Hilbert Hotel) story that I told you today, check out this video. If you want to see a great explanation as to why you can't count (or make a list of) every irrational number, check out this video (start at the 5 minute mark).
CHAPTER 5 STATISTICS TEST WEDNESDAY DEC 6 - if you finish with time to spare, you can work on textbok page 303 #1 and #5a.
Tuesday Dec 5: I went over a couple of questions on the Chapter 5 Review (here is the answer key). Then we started Chapter 6 today. We spent a few minutes reviewing some grades 7-9 graphing rules (the first two pages of this handout), then we started the notes and examples for lesson 6.1, pages 1 in the Ch 6: Systems of Linear Inequalities Notes Booklet. Here is the video for the first part of class, where we reviewed grade 7-9 graphing. Here is the video for the second half of the class where we started Chapter 6, lesson 1 (we made it about 16 minutes into the video). No Chapter 6 homework yet, so you can use tonight to keep preparing for tomorrow's Chapter 5 test.
Monday Dec 4: we went over a few problems from the Assignment 5.5 handout (here is the answer key) and textbook page 264 #5-11, 14-20. Then we had time to work on the Chapter 5 Review (here is the answer key). If you are done the review and you crave more practice for Wednesday's test, you can work on textbook: Chapter 5 Review, and Chapter 5 Self-Test. Remember that we didn't cover section 5.6 so ignore any question that mentioned "confidence intervals". Also, any question that asks for a 'frequency polygon' can be answered with a histogram.
Friday Dec 1: work period for the Assignment 5.5 handout (here is the answer key) and textbook page 264 #5-11, 14-20. If you finish all that, I handed out the Chapter 5 Review (here is the answer key) that you can start working on. You'll get time to work on it Monday and we test the chapter on Wednesday.
Thursday Nov we lose this period to the Mental Hearlth Day Activities
Wednesday Nov 29: we went through part 2 of lesson 5.5 in the Chapter 5 Notes Booklet, learning how to do an inversecdf, as it's called on Desmos. This is basically the opposite of what we did yesterday. Here are both sets of lesson 5.5 notes filled in for anyone who missed one of the lessons. Here is the video of today's class if you missed it or need to see examples again. You can now do all of the Assignment 5.5 handout (here is the answer key). Once you are finished that, you can work on textbook page 264 #5-11, 14-20. Friday will be a work period.
Tuesday Nov 28: After we went over #2 of the 5.4 worksheet #2 (here is the answer key) and here is the Desmos file, we did lesson 5.5, Z-scores, in the Chapter 5 Notes Booklet. If you missed the class, here is a video of the first half of the lesson and here is a video of the second half of the lesson (skip the part from 3:30 to 17:00 unless you want to see how to do this on a T1 graphing calculator). Tonight, you can start working on the Assignment 5.5 handout (here is the answer key) - you won't be able to do #5,6,11 until after tomorrow's lesson.
Monday Nov 27: we went over #5 and 6 of the 5.4 Normal Distribution Part 1 Worksheet (here is the answer key) and textbook #5 (here is the desmos file),10,14. Then we had work time for the 5.4 worksheet #2 (here is the answer key) and here is the Desmos file so you can avoid having to type all the data in. We treated this like a little mini-quiz and then we went over #1. We'll go over #2 tomorrow. If you missed today's class, here is a video of me going over this assignment.
Thursday Nov 23: we went over the 5.4 Normal Distribution Part 1 Worksheet (here is the answer key), up to the end of #4 - we'll go over #5 and 6 on Monday. I handed out 5.4 worksheet #2 (here is the answer key) andhere is the Desmos file so you can avoid having to type all the data in. We'll have some work time for it on Monday.
Wednesday Nov 22: I gave the class work time to finish up the 5.1-5.3 Practice Booklet HAND IN, the 5.4 Normal Distribution Part 1 Worksheet (here is the answer key), and textbook page 251 #1,5,10,11,13,14. NOTE: any place in the textbook that it asks for a "frequency polygon", just make a histogram.
Tuesday Nov 21: we did the second part of the 5.4 Lesson (part 2) in the Chapter 5: Statistical Reasoning Notes Booklet. Here is the video of the class, if you missed any of it or want to see the examples again. Then we had time to work on 5.1-5.3 Practice Booklet (HAND IN WEDNESDAY). If you finish that you can work on the 5.4 Normal Distribution Part 1 Worksheet (here is the answer key). If you finish that too, you can work on textbook page 251 #1,5,10,11,13,14. NOTE: any place in the textbook that it asks for a "frequency polygon", just make a histogram.
Monday Nov 20: today we introduced the concept of a normal distribution with this video and went through Lesson 5.4 - Part 1 in the Chapter 5: Statistical Reasoning Notes Booklet. Here is the video of the class, if you missed any of it or want to see the examples again. If you are ready to move on from the 5.1-5.3 Practice Booklet (HAND IN WEDNESDAY) that I handed out yesterday, the work for this section is this 5.4 Normal Distribution Part 1 Worksheet (here is the answer key). If you want to see a different explanation of this topic, watch this video. If you finish the booklet and want more practice, you can do textbook page 251 #1,6,13,14.
Friday Nov 17: work period for page 233 #2,5,7,8,14 (try doing #2 with just a table and a regular calculator, so that you are practiced at this for the test) and the 5.1-5.3 Practice Booklet . It should be HANDED IN by next Wednesday. NOTE: on the hand in assignment, some of the questions say that the data is a SAMPLE. This means that you use the standart deviation formula that is used for a sample and not for the entire population (on Desmos, "stdevp" is for a population and "stdev" is for a sample.
Thursday Nov 16: we went through lesson 5.3: Standard Deviation in the Chapter 5: Statistical Reasoning Notes Booklet. Here is the video of this lesson from last year. Here is the Desmos file I was using. The textbook practice for this section is page 233 #2,5,7,8,14. I also handed out the 5.1-5.3 Practice Booklet . It should be HANDED IN by next Wednesday.
Wednesday Nov 15: we went over one more problem from the last testbook assignment, page 222 #5. Here is a link to the Desmos file. Then we went over the MMMR Deductive Reasoning problems today, then it was movie time! We watched this video for a very nice description of the meaning of standard deviation. Then we watched another video that shows how to calculate standard deviation. We'll do the actual notes and examples of standard deviation (lesson 5.3) tomorrow. Then we watched a few minutes of the Price is Right. We also watched this video and this video, as an introduction to lesson 5.4 on normal distribution. No new assignment until tomorrow.
Tuesday Nov 14: we went over the questions from textbook page 211 #1b,d, 2,3 and page 222 #3-5 together. Here is the desmos file for page 211 #2 and the file for page 22 #4. Then I handed out this page of MMMR Deductive Reasoning problems that you can work on for the rest of the period.
Monday Nov 13: Work time for textbook page 211 #1b,d, 2,3 and page 222 #3-5. We ran into some technical issues with how the textbook does histograms vs how our tech makes them. We'll go over these and other issues tomorrow.
Friday Nov 10: we lost this class to the Remembrance Day Ceremony.
Thursday Nov 9: Today we finished Lesson 5.2 in the Chapter 5: Statistical Reasoning Notes Booklet. One of the aps I used last year doesn't seem to be working anymore, so I replaced the example on page 6 of your booklet with this one. We used this ap at the online Histogram Generator, as well as Desmos. To save some time on the last example, here is the Desmos file that I used. Here is a video of the class. The assignment for this chapter is textbook page 222 #3-5. I'll give you some work time for this tomorrow (after the Remembrance Day ceremony) and again on Monday.
Tuesday Nov 7: we did the first lesson in Chapter 5: 5.1-Exploring Data. This covered pages 2-5 in the Chapter 5: Statistical Reasoning Notes Booklet and is pretty much a review of concepts from grade 8, but now we focus on using technology to help us manage the data. We didn't get to the final example about the car batteries, so I told the class to try that one at home and we'd go over it tomorrow. Here is a video of the lesson in case you need to see the online or TI instructions again (or you were absent). The assignment for this section is textbook page 211 #1b,d, 2,3. The online Statistics Calculator we used in class is this one here at Calculator Soup.

Monday Sept 18: After today's SET GAME, we did some examples from section 1.6 in the Chapter 1 Notes Package. The next assignment is textbook page 43 #5,6 and page 49 #2-4,6-11,14. You will get more work time tomorrow. If you get bored with the textbook homework, you can always work on the practice Sudoku page from Friday, or the 5-Triangle Puzzle. I also handed out a couple of new puzzles, based on our 1.6 lesson: this Logic Problem and this famous number puzzle called the Tax Collector problem.
Friday Sept 15: We started by finishing off the Lesson 1.5 examples on pages 14 and 15 in the Chapter 1 Notes Package. Then we continued with me demonstrating a couple of the premises to yesterday's homework problems. Then we had a brief but interesting little conversation about what it means to prove that something in math is TRUE (it's a high bar!). Then we solved this problem from yesterday, which lead us to looking at a famous problem called Fermat's Last Theorem. This video helped us to understand it. Then we looked at a couple of near misses in the Simpsons. Then it was PUZZLE TIME! I handed out a practice Sudoku. I also handed out a the 5-Triangle Puzzle. I showed people how to play the SET GAME.
Thursday Sept 14: we started by finishing up the last example of Lesson 1.4 in the Chapter 1 Notes Package, then we rolled though Lesson 1.5. The new assignment is textbook page 31 #1-5,7-15 and page 42 #2,3,5,7,9,10. This is a larger assignment, so you can have until Monday to work on it. In addition to this assignment, I want you to try to figure out what is going on here (if that link does not work for you, here it is on YouTube).
Wednesday Sept 13: we started by figuring out how this webpage is "reading your mind". Then we went over textbook page 17 #2 and page 22 #1,3,4. Then we did the 1.4 notes in the Chapter 1 Notes Package. We didn't quite make it to the end of the lesson, so no homework tonight.
Tuesday Sept 12: we started by taking a minute to see if anyone had questions about the textbook assignment from yesterday: page 13 #2,8,9,11. Then we solved the chord/circle/region problem on page 5 of the notes. Then we went through the notes for sections 1.2 and 1.3 in the Chapter 1 Notes Package. Your homework for this section is to textbook page 17 #2 and page 22 #1,3,4. We'll talk about them tomorrow. And see if you can figure out how this webpage is "reading your mind"
Monday Sept 11: We started by seeing if anyone was still stuck on anything from the grade 10 (and earlier) skill review package (here is the ANSWER KEY). Then we looked a little closer a the Collatz Conjecture, then we played the climb to a prime game, which leads to conjectures. Will my favourite (non-prime) two digit number climb to a prime? Will ALL numbers eventually climb to a prime? Here is a direct link to the prime number checker to help you play. The "climb to a prime" game explains why 13 532 385 396 179 is Mr K's favourite number. After all that fun, we went back to the notes for lesson 1.1 of our Chapter 1 Notes Package. Your first real assignment is: try to come up with a conjecture for the chord/circle/region problem on page 5 of the notes and then do textbook page 13 #2,8,9,11. You should finish these questions for tomorrow. If you want to learn more about the climb to a prime game, here is a video with a professional mathematician talking about it.
Friday Sept 8: I gave some hints for solving the questions on the grade 10 (and earlier) skill review package. On Monday, we'll wrap up any other problems you may be having with it, so try to have all of its questions attempted by then. Then we did some notes in lesson 1.1 of our Chapter 1 Notes Package, but then we went right back to yesterday's problem: is 8^x always going to be larger than 9^(x-1)? We found out that the answer was no (thanks to an excel spreadsheet!). Then we looked at the Collatz Conjecture and tried to get to "1" starting with our favourite numbers. Your only homework for the weekend is to finish the grade 10 (and earlier) skill review package. Here is the ANSWER KEY for the grade 10 skill review.
Thursday September 7: Welcome to Grade 11 Applied Math! Here is the course outline. Here is a grade 10 (and earlier) skill review package just to refresh some old skills while I assign textbooks and get to know you a little bit. You can work on it tonight, but if you don't finish it, we'll have some time in class tomorrow and finish looking at it on Monday. The questions on the grade 10 (and earlier) skill review package should be things you already know how to do, but don't panic if you need a little bit of refresher on those skills. This is our Chapter 1 Notes Package and this is our Chapter 1 Homework booklet. So what is your favourite (non-prime) number?
EXAM REVIEW BOOKLETS ARE HERE! For the exam review, the answers were calculated back in the days when GST + PST was 13% not 12%. The following Answer key problems have been fixed on the link online, but they are still in the hardcopy I handed out : for the Vehcile Finance section, the answers for questions #1-5 are numbered #3-8 on the key (we cut out the first two questions and forgot to re-number the answer key). Also, in the Trigonometry section, the second answer in #12 is actually the answer for number 13, then the rest of the questions should be numbers up to #17.

Friday Sept 15: we did the notes and examples for Lesson 5: Cosine Law Angles (page 13) of the Geometry and Trigonometry Notebook . You can now work on Practice Lesson 5 (pages 11-12) in the Geo+Trig Workbook. Here is a video of the lesson if you missed class or need a refresher.
Thursday Sept 14: we went through some problems from Practice Lessons 2 and 3 (pages 4-8) in the Geo+Trig Workbook together, then we did the notes and examples for Lesson 4: Cosine Law sides (pages 11- 12) of the Geometry and Trigonometry Notebook . You can now work on Practice Lesson 4 (pages 9-10) in the Geo+Trig Workbook. Here is a video of the lesson if you missed class or need a refresher. Some people still need to complete In-Class Assignments #1 and #2 from yesterday.
Wednesday Sept 13: work time for Practice Lesson 3 (pages 4-8) in the Geo+Trig Workbook. When you are finished that, you can work on a couple of two-question In-Class Assignments (yes, they will count for marks).
Tuesday Sept 12: we started with a few minutes to work on Practice Lesson 2 (pages 4-6) in the Geo+Trig Workbook. Then we moved into Lesson 3 in the Geometry and Trigonometry Notebook , where we used Sine Law to solve for missing angles instead of sides. If you missed today's class or want to see the lesson again, here is a video of Lesson 3. The assignment for this section is Practice Lesson 3 in the Geo+Trig Workbook. You will get more work time tomorrow.
Monday Sept 11: I introduced our puzzle fun for this unit: the daily tangram. As we played it, I went around to see if people finished pages 1-3 in the Geo+Trig Workbook. Then we did lesson 2 (pages 7-8) in the Geometry and Trigonometry Notebook . If you missed the class or get home and want to see the examples explained again, here is a video of Lesson 2. The assignment for this lesson is Practice Lesson 2, pages 4-6 in the Geo+Trig Workbook. I will give you more work time for this assignment in class tomorrow, before we move on to Lesson 3. You will need a scientific calculator for class from now on.
Friday Sept 8: we went through the examples on pages 4- 5 in the Geometry and Trigonometry Notebook. Then we had time to work on pages 1-3 in the Geo+Trig Workbook. You should be finished this for Monday. The answer key is at the back of the booklet (Question #1 has a mistake in the answer key - it should be 9 not 3!).
Thursday September 7: Welcome to Grade 12 Essential Math. Today we went over a course outline. I handed out our first unit note booklet: Geometry and Trigonometry Notebook and its accompanying Geo+Trig Workbook. We did the notes and lesson for pages 1-4 in the Notebook. No New homework yet, as we didn't quite finish page 4, but if you want to try to get ahead, tomorrow your assignment will be to do pages 1-3 in the workbook.

CHAPTER 5 TEST FRIDAY NOV 17
Thursday Nov 16: work time to finish the assignments from yesterday. If you are done that, you can move on to the review pages at the end of the Chapter 5 Radicals Notes booklet,
Wednesday Nov 15: We started by correcting pages 19-20 of the Chapter 5 Radicals Notes booklet, then we went over page 281 #21 and a couple of problems from the Radical Challenge Problems (if you scroll to the end of the file there is an answer key). Be skeptical of the mystical nonsense attributed to phi. Phi is cool, but here is a rational look at it's actual significance. After that, it was work time for Page 21 of the booklet and textbook page 300 #1, 3-11, 14, 15, 18,19, 20, 26. If you want more Challenging Radical Problems, I handed out another round of them (here is the key).
Tuesday Sept 19: I handed out a Right Angle Trigonometry Review, and the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook. We went through the Lesson 2.0 Trigonometry Review on page 2 of the Chapter 2: Trigonometry Notebook. You can now do the problems on the Right Angle Trigonometry Review (here is the key).
Monday Sept 18: We started with the 1.5 Mini Quiz. Then we had a work/ask questions period for the Review and Practice Test on pages 66-70.
Friday Sept 15: we did the 1.4 Mini-Quiz. Then we went over a few 1.5 homework problems. Just for fun we also did the enrichment activities on the last two pages of the notes booklet together and the Al's Allowance problem. If you want to explore Fractals some more, here is the link I used in class.
Thursday Sept 14: We went over some of the 1.4 homework problems then we did a 1.3 Mini-Quiz. Then we did the 1.5 Lesson in the Sequences and Series booklet. This included a discussion of Zeno's Paradox. Here is the video for Lesson 1.5. The assignment for this section is textbook page 63 #1-5-8,11, 12, 14, 15 , 19, 20.
Wednesday Sept 13: we did the 1.2 Mini Quiz. Then we went over a few homework problems from the page 39 assignment. Then we did the 1.4 Lesson in the Sequences and Series booklet. The assignment for this section is textbook Pages 53 #1-6, 8, 10, 11,13, 15-19. Here is the lesson video.
Tuesday Sept 12: I started the class by seeing if anyone had any questions from last night's homework. Then we did the 1.3 lesson in the Sequences and Series booklet. The assignment for this section is textbook P. 39 #1-10, 12, 13, 18, 20, 22, 23, 26, 27. Here is the lesson video if you missed the class or want to see the examples again.
Monday Sept 11: we checked to see if anyone had any issues with the page 16 homework from Friday. Then I handed out a booklet of Chapter 1 Mini Quizzes. We did the 1.1 Mini Quiz in class today (the key is at the end of the file - #5 has an error the correct answer is 47). Then we went through Lesson 1.2 in the Sequences and Series booklet. The homework is textbook page 27 #1-7, 9,10,12,14,16,19,23. Here is a video of the 1.2 Lesson if you missed it or want to see it again. If anyone had fun playing with the "see-and-say" problem (the last problem on the Number Sequence Activity), you might enjoy seeing the greatest mathematician of our lifetime (sadly, he died of Covid in 2021) talk about the more traditional version of the see-and-say pattern, so here is that video.
Friday Sept 8: we went over a few things on the grade 10 skill review sheet, then we looked at Lesson 1.1 in the Sequences and Series booklet. The homework is textbook page 16 #1-11,15,19,21,24,25. Also, if you need to, spend some time making sure that you understand how to do the material on the grade 10 skill review sheet. I handed out the answer key for the Number Sequence Activity. If you enjoy challenging problems like that, we should start talking about math contests! Grade 11s can participate in 5 different contests this year!
Thursday September 8: Welcome to Grade 11 Honours Pre-Calculus! Here is the course outline and an overview of the curriculum. Here is a Grade 10 Skill Review, just to refresh some skills while I hand out your first notes package, the Sequences and Series booklet, as well as your textbook. I also handed out a Number Sequence Activity. I'll hand out an answer key for it tomorrow in case you want to try to solve some of it tonight. The questions on the Grade 10 Skill Review should be things you already know how to do, but don't panic if you need a little bit of refresher on those skills (definitely panic and run, don't walk to your counselor if you can't do any of it!). I don't expect anyone to solve all of the questions on the Number Sequence Activity, so think of that as a challenge or puzzle - NOT as curricular expectations!
